Eliminating Child Labour in Southern Africa

Children are promised “particular care . . . and legal protection in conditions of freedom, dignity and security” in the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The spirit of the Charter guides South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland as they strive to fulfil their international obligations to prohibit and eliminate child labour.
Governments of these countries and their civil society partners have joined hands with the International Labour Organisation to create the programme Towards the Elimination of worst forms of Child Labour (TECL) as a technical resource for the development and activation of national child labour programmes.
This website reflects the combined work of governments and their partners, backed by TECL, to:
-
Achieve the African Charter’s promise that “every child shall be protected from all forms of economic exploitation and from performing work that is likely to be hazardous or interfere with the child’s physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development”.
-
Respect the Charter’s appreciation of the contribution of children to family cohesion and assisting their parents in situations of need.
