Trafficking in persons is a human rights outrage equivalent to slavery. But the very nature of the activity makes it difficult to establish its magnitude and precise nature – and to get a grip on it.
The first week of September is observed in South Africa as Human Trafficking Week in order to throw the spotlight on this murky practice and to build our understanding through public discussion.
On Monday 3 September 2007, four international organisations that
are actively involved in addressing human trafficking in Southern
Africa shared their plans to forge a common front against human
trafficking.
The four organisations were:
- United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
- International Labour Organisation (ILO).
- International Organisation on Migration (IOM).
- United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
The non-governmental organisation Diasporafric that initiated Human
Trafficking Week in partnership with the IOM will also participated in
the media conference.
