Commercial sexual exploitation of children
The commercial sexual exploitation of children is commonly referred to
by the acronym CSEC. It is one of the worst forms of child labour
identified in the International Labour Organisation’s
Convention on Worst Forms of Child Labour.
Definition
This abusive practice has been clearly defined in Article 3(b) of
the Convention as:
“. . . the use, procuring or offering of a child for
prostitution, for the production of pornography or for pornographic
performances”.
In situations of extreme poverty and in the context of the HIV and AIDS
epidemics which render many children vulnerable, transactional or
exchange sex is a survival strategy for some children. This involves
the exchange of sex for material goods other than cash, often for
essentials such as shelter, food and household necessities. It is not
classical prostitution, but it remains an exploitative act by the adult
involved.
