Deserted Wives and Children Order
This legislation dates back to 1971 and it is intended to compel any person legally liable to maintain another person or other persons to meet these obligations. It criminalises desertion of wives and children and renders deserters liable to criminal sanction. The legislation also provides for relief to wives and families left destitute as a result of desertion.
The impact on child labour is probably quite limited. But it does have some bearing in ensuring support for women and children and possibly keeping the children out of the labour market.
