Introduction to TECL II
Extract from Southern African Child Labour Link: 14 April
2008
The International Labour Organisation is close to securing funding to continue its technical assistance in the field of child labour and TECL will probably work in the sub-region beyond 2008. The national plans adopted in Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland indicated that additional support from the ILO will be requested. “The US Department of Labour, which funded the first phase of TECL’s work, has indicated that it is looking into providing funding for a second phase, with an emphasis on work on Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, if stakeholders confirm the need,” says TECL head Dawie Bosch.
He added that TECL would engage governments and other stakeholders
in the countries to establish what activities they would like to
prioritise in phase two.
“Funding is limited so we will not be able to work in all the countries we have in the past. We hope that additional funding for further work in Lesotho and Swaziland will be secured elsewhere.”
The first phase of TECL has come to an end in June 2008.
Update, October 2008
Funding has now been secured for TECL II!
The project document (Prodoc), which describes in some detail how TECL II will be implemented, has been finalised and accepted by the donor, the US Department of Labour, and by the International labour Organisation. Input from the stakeholders from Botswana, Namibia and South Africa was taken into account in the process of finalisation.
Applications for the position of Chief Technical Advisor for TCL II closed end August, and the ILO is in the process of assessing candidates.
It is hoped that TECL II will open its doors latest January 2009.
